Dr. Michail Klontzas is an Assistant Professor of Radiology – Oncologic Imaging at the School of Medicine of the University of Crete and an affiliated faculty member of the Institute of Computer Science - FORTH. He graduated from the University of Crete and received his PhD from Imperial College London. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology (USA) before returning to Greece for specialization in radiology. After starting his specialization at the University Hospital of Heraklion, Dr. Klontzas received a second doctoral degree from the University of Crete, focusing on artificial intelligence in bone marrow imaging. He has been trained in oncologic imaging at Karolinska University Hospital (Stockholm, SE) and in musculoskeletal imaging at King’s College Hospital (London, UK). He has received multiple awards and scholarships for his work, including the Burkett fellowship from Imperial College, the Manassaki fellowship from the University of Crete, the 3rd prize for best PhD from Imperial College, reviewer awards from the Radiological Society of North America, and the Young Researcher’s Grant from the European Society of Skeletal Radiology. He has published more than 85 articles on PubMed, seven book chapters for international publishers, and is editing the book "Introduction to Artificial Intelligence" published by Springer under the auspices of EuSoMII. Additionally, he serves as a section editor for the “European Journal of Radiology”, a member of the editorial board of “European Radiology”, and has served on the editorial boards of “Radiology: Artificial Intelligence” (RSNA) and “RadioGraphics” (RSNA). He holds significant positions in international scientific organizations such as the eHealth and Informatics subcommittee of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the ESR Research Committee, the Future Strategy Group of the European Institute of Biomedical Imaging Research (EIBIR), and he is the secretary of the Scientific Committee of the European Society of Medical Imaging Informatics (EuSoMII).
